Quantum Content and Blurred Lines (Seth Godin)
In our long tail, self-published, digital world, there is of course infinite shelf space. And there is no retailer that needs to be sold, because since there’s no shelf space issue, they will carry everything. As a result of no one pushing back on the self-published writer or musician, there’s a huge blurring going on. The design of websites, for example, is all over the map in ways that magazines and books never were.

What Should Authors Expect to Earn? (HuffPo)
When I first started She Writes Press, I used to ask the authors what kinds of sales they expected from their first book—generally a debut novel or memoir. I heard one number come up pretty often: 10,000 copies. That seemed to be a benchmark authors deemed to be possible, perhaps attainable. But the truth is it’s a very hard number to hit. A few of our authors have hit 10,000 copies sold, but that’s with paperback and ebook sales combined, and it usually involves some sort of ebook campaign.

The Persistence of Email Marketing for Book Publishers (Pub Perspectives)

The Pickle Index: A Review (Futurebook)
The Pickle Index, the new book-and-app-novel from former McSweeney’s staffers Eli Horowitz and Russell Quinn (known collectively as Sudden Oak) is one of the rarest and most exciting things that can happen in publishing: an original story, created with and for the multiple formats it lives in.

Publishers and Content Distribution Platforms (E-consultancy)
Third-party distribution channels are an increasingly prominent part of the digital publishing landscape, but instead of rejecting channels that don’t offer full ownership and control, many publishers are embracing them.

Frankfurt Book Fair Considers an Early Start for Agents (PW)
Frankfurt Book Fair officials this week confirmed that talks are underway to possibly open rights dealing at the fair a day earlier in 2016. Although no final decision has been reached, Frankfurt LitAg director Riky Stock said that more than 50 agencies have now added their names to a preliminary list of agencies interested in scheduling meetings in the Frankfurt Book Fair Literary Agents & Scouts Centre on the Tuesday before the fair’s official Wednesday opening.
